BACKGROUND

"My inspiration came from the Biblical story of Naomi and Ruth, two widows. Naomi was mother-in=law to Ruth, and cared for her upon the death of Ruth's husband. When Naomi traveled to her homeland of Israel, Ruth accompanied her and worked tirelessly to help her in return for all Naomi's loving care.

I became a widow in 1998 and i was left with four children and a grandchild. At the time, I was a refugee in Kenya no job or source of income. Living in Kenya and raising my children as a single mother was  I have to say the hardest and most stressful situation I have been in. I cried every night, asking questions with no answers, always looking and praying for a way to make a better life for myself and my children.

When God opened a door for me to come to Canada, I would always look back at the struggles that widows in Africa go through and how hard life was for me when I became a widow. I then prayed to God to help and guide me into building this project that supports widows, orphans and the elderly grandmothers who face poverty in their everyday lives. God directed me to Kenya. Before I went there, I wanted to register this project to do so I needed to find a sponsor. I approached my pastor and asked for his assistance. He accepted , and now my project is registered as Blanket of Naomi.

This is a ministry that strives to assist widows and orphans in African society. We bring widows together and try to assist them to undertake various projects, rather than just throwing money at them we ask them what their interests are and try to build a business with them that will help them become independent. Their able to work together and accomplish one common goal which is to educate their children.

We also assist in other ways that may be required: In the future we hope to put up an orphanage for the children whose parents have been claimed by HIV/AIDS.

When the head of the family or the bread winner dies it disrupts the family and leads to isolation. It is difficult for the remaining family members to enjoy life. In most cases, the order siblings are forced to leave school and start to provide for the family. Some of them can be younger than 15 years and are forced to leave school because their family can not afford the fees. Blanket of Naomi seeks to relieve them of this burden.
